Agashi chutney or agashi hindi is extremely tasty and flavorful. BTW, I have read reports that chewing on agashi seeds is really effective in curing some forms of cancer. It is also used to lower cholesterol because it is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids.
Ingredients:
Agashi (Flax seeds) – 150 grams, Garlic – three bulbs, salt, and chilli powder
Process:
-
Roast the cleaned flex seeds on a tawa/ frying pan till the shine on the seed disappears making the seeds brownish black.
-
Allow these to cool down.
-
Powder the roasted flex seeds in a grinder.
-
Add peeled garlic, chili powder and salt to taste.
-
Grind them well to get a nice powder.
Tips and Tricks:
-
MTR sells agashi chutney packets..something to stock up when you are in India/Bangalore.
Typically Served With:
I like the way my mami from Columbia – Parineeta Mami uses it. She toasts a bagel and then sprinkles agashi chutney on it! Try it – you’ll be amazed at this Indianized bagel!! This is normally eaten with rotti and chapatti with curds.

Hi Rashmi,
Thanks for the correction. I’ll go ahead and change it on the blog. BTW, did you know that we could roast flax seeds, grind those and mix a tablespoon with your morning cereal everyday? That lowers cholesterol!
Thanks,
Harsha
I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT FLAX SEEDS .
WHERE I CAN GET THESE IN INDIA.
Hi Jatinder,
You should be able to get flax seeds in any grocery shop in India. Flaxseeds are known as ALSI in Hindi, Gujarati, and Punjabi, Ali Vidai in Tamil. In Marathi, it is also known as jawas, alashi, and linseed. In Bengali, it is known as Tishi, in Oriya its Pesi. In Kannada, its called Agasi, and telugu people call it Avise ginzalu. Finally, in Kerala, the Malyalis call it Cheruchana vithu. It does have cholesterol lowering effects and has been recommended to reduce effects of some cancer chemotherapy chemicals.

Ref flax seed chutney -Nice to get informtion and recipe.thanks.
I think you mean to grind garlic, chilly powder and flax seeds into paste (not powder) because i suppose garlic used has to be fresh.
I also grind 100g grams of alsi seed (with or without roasting) and mix it with my atta.
can i get information about flaxseed nutritiuonal value
Is this Flax seed or Agashi same as Horse gram (tamil kollu, malayalam mudhira)?
Hi Joy,
.
Horse gram is a lentil. Flax seed looks like it but is smaller and flatter and shinier

Namskara,
Great to see the website with lots a North Knataka dishes.I am basically from Davangere but stayed in Hubli for 15 years, now settled in Blore.
Flax seeds are damn good for health, basically a cholestrol reducing agent.
Not many stores rather I haven’t seen a store selling Flax seeds in Blore. I usually get those from my villages. Any inputs on this will be greatly helpful.
