Homemade cures

I have been collecting these quick tips from a lot of friends, websites, books in the library and finally I think this page is worth making public. A lot have been passed to me from my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and my in-laws. Hope you find these helpful. If you know any more, let me know and I’ll be happy to add to the list:

  • Turmeric powder added to milk is used to soothe colds and coughs.
  • A very good remedy for sore throat is to gargle salt water.
  • Cloves kept in mouth help to relieve throat ache/sore throat.
  • A mixture of honey, ginger powder and ghee put on the tongue (1/4 teaspoon) can be used to relieve cough immediately.
  • Ginger+water+sugar – heat for 5 minutes and drink it to treat a cold.
  • Eating fruits after dinner is good for digestion and to avoid constipation. Always eat fresh fruit instead of drinking fruit juice. Juice does not contain as much fiber as the fruit.
  • If you have acidity, you can try to drink a juice made with kokum (soak and boil kokum, strain, add sugar and salt and water). 
  • Drinking cold lemon juice (lemon+water+sugar) before meals also helps to reduce acidity. The same when heated and taken helps to reduce constipation.
  • Chewing ajwain seeds or fennel seeds (badesoap, sounf) after dinner helps to aid digestion.
  • Eating apples before dinner improves apetite and after dinner it aids in digestion.
  • Lemon+ginger +black pepper+salt+water – heat for 5 minutes and sip before meals to improve apetite.
  • Garlic is good to improve immunity. Chop garlic and take it like a medicine to improve immunity against common ailments. It also helps to reduce diarrhoea.
  • Eating a clove of garlic before brushing every morning helps to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • Chewing a spoon of ajwain seeds every 3-4 hours improves apetite.
  • Fennel seeds+water boiled and strained is a very good laxative.
  • Methi seeds swallowed with a cup of buttermilk helps to reduce diarrhoea.
  • You can drink mint juice obtained by boiling mint leaves in a cup of water after dinner to reduce acidity.
  • Bananas are excellent to improve one’s energy and mood.
  • Squeezed mint juice (a couple of spoons) sipped in the morning is good to improve apetite.
  • Tulsi+honey paste can be used to reduce fever
  • a slice of fresh tomato or cucumber rubbed to face helps to reduce pimples
  • a tablespoon of sprouted lentils consumed daily helps to add proteins to your daily intake
  • Cinnamon powder+honey added to a cup of warm water help to relieve sore throat
  • Taking hing and ghee (little hing/asafoetida and a spoon of ghee) before dinner helps to improve apetite.
  • Water+nutmeg powder helps to get good sleep
  • A juice made with dried raisins, sugar and fennel seeds (soaked for 4 hours and blended) reduces body heat and cleans digestive tract.
  • Lemon+honey+warm water also help to relieve sore throat
  • Tulsi leaves+water+lemon warmed and strained help with sore throat
  • Ajwain arc or ajwain seeds help to relieve stomach aches when taken with a pinch of salt
  • Ginger powder+brown sugar/jaggery in the ratio 1:3 should be taken a 1/2 teaspoon twice daily to help with stomach ache
  • Panha helps to reduce heat during summer (raw mangoes boiled and pureed, cardamom powder, saffron and sugar concentrate mixed with a cup of water). 
  • Turmeric powder+pepper powder (black)+honey in a spoon help to reduce cough
  • Mint+Tulsi+ginger+1 cup water – grind and strain. Mix with honey and sip to reduce fever.
  • Lemon+ginger -1 teaspoon each mixed and taken helps to relieve headache
  • a paste made with khas khas (poppy seeds)+sugar+honey helps with insomnia.
  • Tulsi leaf extract mixed with ginger extract should be used as nose drops to treat sinus headaches
  • A paste made with cinnamon, haldi (turmeric) and milk should be applied to forehead and nose to relieve fevers and colds.
  • Tulsi+lemon helps to relieve headache.
  • A teaspoon of mint leaves+honey+lemon juice given thrice daily helps to reduce diarrhoea
  • Mint leaves+lemon juice+honey+salt+jeera seeds+water blended and chilled helps to stop diarrhoea
  • Dried amla powder mixed with warm water is used to reduce cholesterol
  • Curds after meals aids with digestion and reduces sleeplessness.
  • 1 teaspoon of amla juice+honey every morning helps to reduce blood pressure
  • A glass of milk with turmeric powder and honey helps to sleep well.
  • Tulsi+lemon+ginger juice applied to face reduces pimples

    yes – raw mangoes boiled and pureed, cardamom powder, saffron and sugar concentrate mixed with a cup of water.

    Hi Anu,
    You can take anything that is green (spinach, green leaf vegetables, brocolli etc) to get iron. Ragi is another very good source of iron. You can look up raagi dosa and other recipes on this site..
